Built on an entirely new architecture designed to maximise interior space in a compact and stylish package, the innovative new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a landmark vehicle for the brand that will appeal to a whole new customer segment.

In addition to its versatile functionality, the 2 Series Active Tourer remains a true BMW with its inherent performance, efficiency and driving pleasure supplied by four new generation TwinPower Turbo engines with the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies and a chassis design that delivers an engaging driving experience.

BMW Group Australia general manager of sales, Tom Noble said with its unique combination of style, dynamics, functionality and comfort, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer would appeal to couples and families who not only need the versatile space to cater for their lifestyle, but also enjoy the premium features and driver enjoyment offered by a BMW.

“The arrival of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in Australia really does open up the brand to whole new customer segment and we are excited to be able to offer such a practical, spacious, stylish and dynamic car in the compact class.

“With its powerful and highly efficient latest generation TwinPower Turbo engines, extensive safety equipment and long list of standard premium features for refined comfort and convenience, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer also offers outstanding value.”

With a body measuring just 4342mm in length, 1800mm in width and 1555mm in height, the 2 Series Active Tourer is eminently at home in an urban environment while maintaining a distinctive, classy and stylish aesthetic that stands out from the crowd.

The exterior design combines trademark BMW styling cues – the slightly forward slanting wide kidney grille, twin circular headlights, short front and rear overhangs and L-shaped tail lights – which, together with a sculpted bonnet, crisp contours and high tapering roofline that finishes in a neatly integrated hatch top spoiler, help to create a car with a particularly dynamic road presence.

Further design distinction for both the exterior and interior is offered with Sport Line - standard on 218i,218d and 220i models - and Luxury Line (standard on 225i) trim and highlight packages.

Inside, the contemporary design theme continues with the broad layered styling of the instrument panel and door panels, large glass areas, and elevated seating providing a light, airy and spacious feel.

That space is no illusion either with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer providing ample room for five occupants with comfortable and supportive Sports Seats in the front and a versatile 40/20/40-split fold rear seatback.

The rear seat offers outstanding flexibility with a backrest that can be angled in three different positions – Normal, Comfort or Cargo – or folded fully flat according to passenger and luggage demands. In addition to this, the 60/40-split seat base is able to slide fore and aft through 130mm, providing either greater rear legroom or increased luggage space, depending on the need.

With a low loading height and wide electrically-operated, automatically opening and closing tailgate as standard, access into the large 468-litre load space is easy. With the rear seats folded flat, luggage capacity can be increased to 1510 litres.

The all new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is very well equipped for comfort and convenience with standard features including climate control, cruise control with braking function, Sensatec upholstery, multi-function sport leather steering wheel, keyless ignition, Rain Sensor automatic windscreen wipers and lights, electric windows and mirrors, and front and rear Park Distance Control.

Powertrain – sporty performance and outstanding efficiency

Complementing its new state-of-the-art architecture, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer features a range of latest-generation transversely mounted engines including the first ever three-cylinder powerplant for a core BMW vehicle.

Designed for optimal balance of sporty performance and outstanding efficiency, all four engines in the 2 Series Active Tourer range feature BMW TwinPower Turbo technology along with BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. These include Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, low-rolling resistance tyres, coasting function for the Steptronic Automatic transmissions and the use of lightweight but strong materials such as the aluminum bonnet that is 50 per cent lighter than an equivalent steel bonnet.

The ECO PRO mode for the Driving Experience Control, that also forms part of the BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, provides intelligent energy management of auxiliary and electrical components and offers even greater efficiency with up to a 20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption.

Powering the 218i Active Tourer is the new 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that combines a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic variable valve timing to generate a maximum power of 100kW at 4400rpm. The peak torque of 220Nm is on tap from as low as 1250rpm and can be increased for short periods to 230Nm using the overboost function.

Mated to a standard six-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission, this strong and efficient engine provides frugal fuel consumption of just 5.2l/100km with corresponding CO2 emissions of 122g/km on the EU combined test and solid acceleration with a 0-100kmh time of 9.2 seconds and top speed of 205kmh.

The 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo diesel four-cylinder engine in the mid-range 218d Active Tourer ensures the car is one of the most fuel efficient in its class using only 4.2l/100km on the EU cycle with CO2 emissions of 111g/km.

At the same time, the engine’s common-rail high pressure direct fuel injection, advanced thermodynamics and variable geometry turbocharger produce a maximum  power of 110kW at 4000rpm and a peak torque of 330Nm between 1750rpm and 2750rpm for nimble city driving.

The 218d is fitted with an eight-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission, that, like all transmissions in the range, has been optimised for the new architecture and powertrain layout, providing the 218d with a 0-100km time of 8.9 seconds and top speed of 210kmh.

Also equipped with BMW TwinPower and EfficientDynamics technologies is the 220i Active Tourer with is powerplant derived from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder fuel efficient engine producing a maximum power of 141kW of power and 280Nm of torque, taking just 7.4 seconds to reach 100km/h with a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100km.

With a 0-100kmh time of 6.6 seconds and top speed of 240kmh, the 225i Active Tourer is the sporting flagship of the range with power coming from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, TwinPower Turbo engine featuring a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic variable valve timing.

Generating a maximum  power output of 170kW at 5000rpm and peak torque of 350Nm from a low 1250rpm right through to 4500rpm, this engine delivers effortless performance on the highway, in the city and out on a winding country road while still maintaining an efficient fuel consumption figure of 6.1l/100km and CO2 emissions of 142g/km on the EU test.

Complementing the powerful engine in the 225i Active Tourer, is an eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission that features Launch Control to optimise traction and performance for fast off-the line acceleration and steering wheel paddle shifts for quick gear changes in manual mode.

Dynamics – comfort and true BMW agility in equal measures

With a long 2670mm wheelbase and wide track of 1561mm at the front and 1562mm at the rear (225i Active Tourer - 1557mm front, 1558mm rear), the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer combines typical BMW agility and directional control with high levels of stability and ride comfort.

Delivering this is a torsionally-stiff, lightweight and aerodynamic body and architecture and an advanced lightweight suspension system that has been newly developed from the ground up.

The suspension incorporates a single-joint spring-strut axle at the front and multi-link system at the rear with springs, dampers, mounting points and geometry optimised for the new architecture to provide true BMW dynamics and comfort.

The standard Servotronic speed-sensitive electromechanical steering in the 218i Active Tourer and 218d Active Tourer maintains BMW standards for precision and response while the four-wheel disc brakes provide stable, effective and fade resistant stopping performance.

Both these models are fitted with the three-mode Driving Experience Control whose SPORT and COMFORT modes offer dedicated settings for the throttle, steering and gearshift responses  according to driver demands.

In addition to this, a Performance Control system standard on all models ensures even more agile handling by applying a discreet variable braking function to the front wheels to enhance cornering control.

Offering an even more dynamic driving experience to match the performance nature of its powertrain, the 225i Active Tourer also features Servotronic variable sport steering and adaptive Dynamic Damper Control to further refine ride comfort or sports agility depending on whether SPORT or COMFORT mode is selected for the Driving Experience Control.

All versions of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer also benefit from a full complement of electronic chassis control systems with the standard Dynamic Stability Control incorporating Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC).

The DSC system offers three modes of operation depending on driver preferences. DSC is the default mode while in DTC mode, the system provides higher intervention thresholds for a more engaging driving experience.

In DSC Off mode, the system still monitors stability and control with the EDLC function simulating the effect of a mechnical differential lock to provide improved traction when accelerating out of corners.
